SMOOTH CONCRETE PATCHING COMPOUND USED ON AWARD WINNING ART DECO BUILDING
Cypress, CA – February 27, 2006 — The Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) presented Apffels Coffee Warehouse Building with a 2006 Tilt-Up Achievement Award for innovative tilt-up design.
Apffels Coffee in Santa Fe Springs, California needed a new facility to house roasting, packaging, warehouse, and corporate offices. They wanted to capture the same Art Deco Era feel as its previous 1940s coffee roasting facility and integrated that into the tilt-up process.
Achieving flawless recessed artwork cast in the panels was the biggest challenge. Artwork needed to be sandblasted without destroying the finer aspects of the art itself. The artwork was created by hand carved foam. The panels were poured directly over the foam and the foam was later removed to reveal the detailed artwork cast directly into the concrete. Eifs was used on the columns and provided an aesthetically pleasing and energy efficient wall surface. The sacking, performed with WunderFixx® was used to ensure flawless walls and sharp edges and corners to compliment the artwork.
Formulated with original non-shrink Rapid Set® Cement, WunderFixx® has virtually no cracking, a smoother finish, excellent sandability, superior adhesion, and more durability. WunderFixx® provides a low alkaline surface, which reduces the susceptibility to color burnout, and can therefore be painted in as little as 3 hours. It has achieved the highest possible mold resistance rating based on ASTM 3273 and has been shown to have excellent freeze/thaw performance.
