Fricks Flooring Systems has completed another top-quality floor. C&S Wholesale Grocers called on Fricks to place a 200,000 square foot 8” thick System-K freezer floor for their new distribution center in York, PA. While Fricks is a seasoned veteran of Type K concrete floors, this was their first System-K job.
To make System-K concrete, Fricks utilized a portable silo for the addition of the Komponent at the jobsite, along with the K-Fiber. CTS rep Ed Russell commented, “Using the silo gives us more control of the concrete, and we get more expansion as well.” The concrete was ordered from the batch plant at a 3 inch slump. When each truck arrived at the jobsite, it was backed up to the silo and the appropriate dosage of Komponent was added. Then they added one bag of K-Fiber per yard of concrete and the appropriate amount of water to get to a 5-6” slump. After mixing for about 5 minutes the concrete was placed and the cycle started again. About 250 yards of concrete were placed each day.
Each placement was cured using PNA HydraCure disposable curing blankets for 7 to 10 days. These blankets kept the surface continuously wet for the entire curing period, minimizing the chance of any shrinkage cracking. The efforts paid off with virtually no cracking occurring in the entire 200,000 square foot area.
